What If Citizens Could Recognise Organisations Even Before the Phone Rings?

The Starting Point

Dear TRAI Team,

At the outset, thank you for unveiling the 1601 number series.

The introduction of the 1600 number series marked an important step towards strengthening trusted service and transaction-related calls.

The unveiling of the 1601 number series extends that thoughtful journey to more essential public utility and service sectors.

Sometimes...

a thoughtful public initiative quietly grows.

One number series at a time.

One citizen experience at a time.

Act I | One More Number Series

The New Number Series starting from 1601

Every day...

citizens receive important service calls.

From electricity providers.

From water utilities.

From LPG distributors.

From courier and logistics service providers.

Each organisation serves a different purpose.

Yet every call begins in exactly the same place.

A phone screen.

Act II | One Familiar Question

The phone rings.

The screen lights up.

We have only a few seconds.

Answer?

Or...

Ignore?

Recognition still comes first.

Confidence follows.

Then begins the conversation.

Act III | One Thoughtful Expansion

The TRAI Direction identifies the sectors that will use the 1601 number series.

Citizens, however, recognise organisations.

Not sector classifications.

Perhaps...

as organisations are progressively allotted 1601 numbers...

a simple public directory of participating organisations may help citizens understand the initiative more easily.

Not because citizens need another database.

But because recognition begins with familiarity.

The manner in which such information is organised and shared is naturally best left to the concerned experts and stakeholders.

Act IV | One Citizen Illustration

A regulatory direction may identify sectors.

A citizen recognises organisations.

Perhaps...

as more organisations begin using the 1601 number series...

a simple public directory of participating organisations may make the initiative easier to understand.

Not by explaining the regulations.

But by helping citizens recognise who is calling.

The First Line on the Whiteboard

Can a public directory make 1601 easier to recognise?

Act V | One Citizen Philosophy

Every thoughtful public initiative deserves to be understood.

Not only implemented.

The 1601 number series is another opportunity.

An opportunity to make important service calls easier to recognise.

Easier to answer.

And easier to trust.

One recognised organisation.

One recognised incoming call.

One more trusted conversation.

Citizen Observation

Citizen Observation 777 does not suggest how a public directory for the 1601 number series should be designed, maintained or implemented.

It simply observes that citizens recognise organisations more readily than sector classifications.

A simple public directory of participating organisations may therefore make the 1601 initiative easier to understand and recognise.

The manner in which such information is organised, maintained and shared is naturally best left to the concerned experts and stakeholders.

Such a directory will boost the confidence levels and encourage the receivers to pick up the calls without minimal confusion.

Disclaimer

This Citizen Observation is inspired by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's Direction introducing the 1601 number series for specified service and transactional calls.

It simply presents one citizen observation on how a public directory of participating organisations may help strengthen public awareness and recognition. The manner in which such an approach may be considered or implemented is naturally best left to the concerned experts and stakeholders.

The April 11 – Digital Transactions Day Philosophy

April 11 marks the beginning of India's UPI journey.

Digital Transactions Day is therefore centred on April 11.

Every trusted digital transaction begins with confidence.

Every confident interaction begins with recognition.

Perhaps...

thoughtful public initiatives are most effective when they are not only implemented...

but also easily recognised and understood by citizens.

The Joy of Digital Transactions.
