The Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will begin on January 13, 2025, with the Paush Purnima Snan, and will conclude on February 26, 2025, coinciding with Maha Shivratri.

A Historic Gathering

The Mahakumbh, set to commence on January 13, 2025, at the Sangam (confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati), will continue until February 26.

This religious pilgrimage, held every 12 years, alternates between Haridwar, Ujjain, Nasik, and Prayagraj. This year’s edition is expected to attract millions of visitors from across the globe.

In a major setback to visitors/devotees planning to visit Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025, the Railways have clarified that there is no concept of FREE TRAVEL, i.e., money has to be paid to travel in the trains during the Mela period.

This is disappointing but in the larger interests, free travel is prohibited.

The clarification came via an Official Statement on 18^th December 2024.

Some articles were floating on social media, that free travel in Trains for the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025 is in the pipeline.

As this is not true, Railways decided to clarify via an official statement to minimise the damage of wrong perception.

Basically, there are two types of Rail Travel.

Type 01) UnReserved i.e No seat numbers are allotted, passengers can travel in Unreserved coaches. This is more popular in MEMU trains.

Type 02) Reserved i.e specific coach number / seat numbers are allotted. This is popular in long distance trains.

 

No Free Train Travel During Maha Kumbh: Indian Railways Clarifies

As the highly anticipated Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 approaches, Indian Railways has stepped in to address rumors circulating in certain media outlets about free travel for pilgrims. These reports, according to the Railway Ministry, are entirely baseless and misleading. Traveling without a valid ticket remains strictly prohibited under Indian Railways regulations and is a punishable offense. The ministry urges travelers to disregard such misinformation and abide by ticketing rules during the event.

Massive Arrangements for Seamless Travel

To manage the anticipated surge of pilgrims, Indian Railways is implementing comprehensive measures. From special holding areas and additional ticket counters to other passenger facilities, efforts are being made to ensure a smooth travel experience. Hundreds of "Mela Special" trains are set to operate between January 13 and February 26, 2025, facilitating transportation for devotees traveling to Prayagraj. These trains are strategically planned to cover various zones across the country, ensuring accessibility for pilgrims from all regions.

Infrastructure Upgrades to Support the Influx

Indian Railways has allocated Rs 933 crore for infrastructure development and passenger amenities ahead of the event. A total of 992 special trains, in addition to the existing 6,580 regular trains, will cater to the influx of visitors. The Railway Ministry has also introduced 174 longer rakes and granted additional stoppages to 140 passing trains, significantly enhancing capacity and convenience. Furthermore, a Rs 3,700-crore project aims to double railway tracks and improve operational efficiency within the Prayagraj division.

Record-Breaking Preparations for Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, beginning on January 13 and concluding on February 26, is expected to attract over six crore visitors to Prayagraj. With religious events like Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, and Basant Panchami taking place during this time, the railways anticipate an unprecedented demand for services. The completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor will also play a crucial role in diverting freight traffic, enhancing passenger train punctuality. 27 Days to Go: Reclaiming Sacred Grounds – The Ganga’s Shift and the Battle for 4,000 Hectares

 

Only 27 days to go for the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025.

As the deadline for the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025 approaches, thousands of workers are working multiple shifts to welcome the devotees and visitors.

'It’s a 24-hour mission'

Between the last Kumbh Mela in 2019 and the upcoming Maha Kumbh in 2025, the Ganga River shifted approximately 200 to 500 meters to the right, washing away 3,200 hectares of land.

 

As the first rays of dawn touch the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati in Prayagraj, thousands of workers begin their arduous task — shaping the sprawling grounds that will host the Maha Kumbh 2025.

Their mission: to transform reclaimed land into a divine city ready to welcome crores  of pilgrims.

 

Between the last Kumbh Mela in 2019 and the upcoming Maha Kumbh in 2025, the Ganga River shifted approximately 200 to 500 meters to the right, washing away 3,200 hectares of land. To ensure the event's grandeur, authorities undertook a colossal reclamation project, restoring the lost land and adding 800 hectares more, totaling 4,000 hectares.

Please note that the original lost land has been restored for the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025, and another 800 hectares have been added.

This is a massive restoration process, in which multiple infrastructure agencies are involved.

The core mela area is a Pop-up Tent City, so the infrastructure has to be built from the ground up.

"We are building something sacred," said Ramesh Yadav, a laborer. "When we see this land becoming a spiritual city, we feel like we are contributing to history."

 

Work has been relentless since October, with experts from the Irrigation Department collaborating with the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, to channel the Ganga and create new ghats. "The erosion reduced available land significantly compared to 2019," said Mela Adhikari Vijay Kiran Anand. "Through dredging and channeling, we restored the banks, ensuring more space for pilgrims."

Visitors/Devotees to Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 can travel comfortably in multiple trains.

13,000 trains will criss-cross the Kumbh Mela area during the Kumbh Mela days, ferrying lakhs and lakhs of passengers.

Towards this end, Railway Minister’s Ashwini Vaishnaw visited Varanasi and Prayagraj on Sunday i.e 8th December 2024.

One of the main advantages of trains is that travel is smoother than road travel, as no potholes can exist on railway tracks!

Also,  a high number of people can travel by train, as compared to buses.

 

 

As the countdown to the Maha Kumbh 2025 begins, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has reaffirmed Indian Railways' commitment to ensuring a seamless experience for millions of pilgrims.

During his recent visit to Varanasi and Prayagraj, the minister inspected key infrastructure upgrades, reviewed ongoing projects, and shared his vision for a stress-free pilgrimage.

Key Highlights of the Preparations

1. Massive Infrastructure Upgrades
• Over ₹5,000 crore has been invested in improving railway infrastructure over the past two years.
• A total of 45 new platforms and 23 large holding areas are being developed to accommodate the influx of passengers.
• 21 foot overbridges and 554 ticketing kiosks have been added to ensure smooth passenger movement.
2. Ring Railway Network for Connectivity
   A new ring railway system is being developed to improve connectivity between Prayagraj, Ayodhya, and Varanasi. This will make travel more efficient and reduce congestion during peak days of the mela.
3. 13,000 Special Train Services
   Indian Railways will operate 13,000 train services, including 3,000 special trains, over the 45-day period to cater to the anticipated 1.5 to 2 crore pilgrims. The trains will connect major cities and towns, ensuring devotees can travel to Prayagraj without disruptions.
4. Advanced Monitoring Systems
   Control rooms have been set up at every station, providing live feeds to a master control room in Prayagraj. CCTV systems will monitor passenger movement in real time to ensure safety and efficient crowd management.
5. Tech-Driven Solutions
   The introduction of the mobile Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) in Prayagraj will allow pilgrims to book tickets easily and avoid long queues. This initiative was inspired by its success during events like the Rath Yatra in Puri.

Ministerial Oversight and Inspection

Minister Vaishnaw’s visit began with an inspection of Varanasi Railway Station, followed by a window trailing journey to Prayagraj. At Prayagraj, he reviewed critical projects, including:

• The Ganga Bridge, vital for connecting key mela sites.
• The Sangam area, where Kalpavas (extended pilgrimages) take place.
• Phaphamau Station, a significant hub for arriving pilgrims.

The minister expressed confidence in managing the anticipated surge of devotees, especially during the four main bathing days. Drawing on experiences from high-profile events like the Ayodhya Ram Temple consecration and Puri Rath Yatra, he emphasized meticulous planning and coordination.

As per news portals, Shri Chandrababu Naidu has responded positively and may set up a camp office in Prayagraj during the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025 window.

 Kumbh Mela Invitations Begin: UP Deputy CM Urges Telangana Devotees to Join – 36 Days to Go.

The Kumbh Mela is a celebration of unity, faith, and renewal.

The State of Uttar Pradesh has started the distribution of Invitation Cards for Maha Kumbh 2025 to be held in Prayagraj.

The UP government is sending invitations to the Chief Ministers of non-BJP ruled states. Ministers of the UP government are going to distribute the invitation cards.

In this regard, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Friday (6^th December 2024)  invited Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to attend the Maha Kumbh 2025 to be held in Prayagraj.

 

Shri Maurya met the Chief Minister at the latter's residence at Jubilee Hills here and extended the invitation, on 6^th December 2024, officials sources said.

Preparations for the Maha Kumbh to be held in Prayagraj are going on in full swing.

 

Deputy CM Shri Keshav Prasad Maurya while in Hyderabad also invited Telangana  Governor, Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, for Maha Kumbh 2025.

Highlighting that the Mahakumbh is a unique celebration of unity within India's diversity, Keshav Prasad Maurya, Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, urged devotees from Telangana to attend the MahaKumbh Mela to be held in Prayagraj commencing January 13, 2025 to February 26 in huge numbers.

 

Deputy CM Shri Maurya addressed a press meet in Hyderabad on Friday at the Park Hyatt at the Sri Nagar Colony where he invited Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's family to attend the Mahakumbh-2025 in Prayagraj.

He also met Reddy at the latter's residence at Jubilee Hills here and extended the invitation.

Brands are willing to spend around Rupees Three Thousand Crores during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025, and conclude on February 26, 2025.

 

The event will take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

The Kumbh Mela is a Hindu religious pilgrimage and one of the world's largest religious fairs.

Indian companies are set to spend ₹3,000 crore on branding and marketing at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, seeing it as a significant consumption opportunity with 400 million expected attendees.

Major brands from various sectors are planning extensive on-ground activations and consumer engagement strategies to maximize their visibility and connect.

Crayons Advertising has acquired the advertising rights for the Maha Kumbh. The team is extensively busy responding to queries, both from domestic and international companies.

As there are only 38 days to go for the Live date, the pace is very hectic.

There’s overwhelming interest from FMCG, pharma, low-cost mobility providers, EVs and UPI gateways.

HUL, Coca-Cola, ITC, Bisleri, Parle, Dabur, Paytm and Emami as well as mobility players and EV companies are among those interested in the event, organisers said.

 

Companies are doubling down on marketing spending, setting up stalls, appointing distributors and readying supply chains, launching spiritual packs, and even using social platforms like Instagram, an executive organising the event said.

Apart from usual regular stalls, visitors / devotes will experience interactive booths, virtual reality experience zones, installations, branded lounges, and engagement touchpoints.

Dabur has planned a series of consumer activations to strengthen connect with users for most of  their  power brands.

Visitors / Devotees can look forward to ‘Dant’ snan zones inside the Kumbh premises with automated toothpaste dispensers, while its Amla and Vatika brands are setting up over 100 branded changing rooms for women devotees at the ghats.

 

Other plans include setting up hair dryers and pampering zones inside the changing rooms, offering immunity shots, setting up baby care rooms (a brand association with its Lal Tail brand), a life-size Amrit Kalash installation, and creating kamandal shaped packs for pilgrims to carry holy water.

 

Makers of daily essentials said they are aiming to leverage the dual opportunity of tapping more consumers from II and III-tier cities and offering samples to international visitors.

 

Emami, which makes Navratna therapeutic oil and Boroplus antiseptic skin-care products are prepping up with definite strategies to engage with consumers and enhance brand presence.

As of now, more details about Emami are not available in public domain.

 

ITC’s brands, including Mangaldeep incense, Bingo chips and Yippee noodles, are planning on-ground activations and purpose-led initiatives for Kumbh.

Parking solutions provider Park+ has come onboard to provide automated parking solutions while tieups for environment-friendly transportation options with electric three-wheeler service providers are in the works.

 

The use of cash for parking at a festival of this scale leads to a lot of chaos. We are expecting up to 25 lakh vehicles during the festival. We will provide parking solutions linked to Fastag,” said Amit Lakhotia, chief executive officer, Park+. “There are several ongoing discussions to integrate intra-city transport on our app for the mela. Besides, we are looking at setting up a few electric vehicle charging stations for ease of EV owners,” Lakhotia added.

The event can’t be compared to the consecration ceremony at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya in January this year or other spiritual places, given its scale.

Parle Products, maker of Hide & Seek and Monaco biscuits, is in talks with suppliers to fulfil the demand and not create any bottlenecks.

 

Since the Maha Kumbh is returning after a gap of 12 years, and now religious fervour and spirituality have become very big in India, the revenues with previous Kumbh melas are not comparable.

It's a time for devotees to bathe in the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers to cleanse themselves of sins and gain spiritual merit.

The Kumbh Mela is also a celebration of unity, faith, and renewal.
