The Intro – No choice but to be back on NPCI BHIM

Did you notice the difference in the new NPCI BHIM?

 The Trigger

Sometimes, the most interesting citizen observation is not about what is missing.

It is about noticing what has changed.

In June 2026, I came back to NPCI BHIM as my primary UPI app — simply to use it as an everyday citizen and observe where the journey would lead.

The June Blog Post @ https://prashantnepayments.blogspot.com/2026/06/i-am-back-npci-bhim-where-my-next-upi-journey-begins.html

Then came July.

The July Blog Post @

https://innovationinbanking.blogspot.com/2026/07/blog-post.html

One very specific observation emerged:

The most-used feature should be the easiest to find.

That observation was about Scan & Pay and its discoverability.

And then came 10 September 2026.

I opened BHIM again.

Something immediately caught my attention.

Citizen Observation

Act I — I Was Looking for Scan & Pay

In July, the QR Scan & Pay journey was there.

The large QR button existed.

But for my everyday usage pattern, it did not feel immediately discoverable.

That became the observation.

Not about features.

Not about performance.

Not about cashback.

Not about anything else.

Just one simple citizen question:

Can the most-used payment action be the easiest one to find?

Act II — I Am Back

September 10.

BHIM opened.

And this time, the QR Scan & Pay button was visibly larger and more prominent.

That was the only change I wanted to notice.

Everything else on the screen can wait.

The only thing I am looking at here is:

The QR Scan & Pay button.

July → September.

Then → Now.

Something had changed.

Act III — Awesome, NPCI BHIM Team

Was this change made because of one citizen's observation?

I don't know.

And I don't need to know.

There could be many reasons behind a product interface changing.

But as a citizen who had written about the discoverability of Scan & Pay in July, opening the app again in September and seeing a more prominent QR Scan & Pay button was worth acknowledging.

So, simply:

Awesome, NPCI BHIM Team.

No demand.

No expectation.

No follow-up.

Just an observation.

The Citizen Observation

Sometimes feedback doesn't need a reply.

Sometimes the most interesting reply is simply:

Something changes.

And sometimes, as citizens, we may notice that change only because we were paying attention.

Whiteboard

THE QR SCAN & PAY BUTTON IS BIGGER.
I AM BACK.

Closing Thought

June:

I am back.

July:

I was looking for Scan & Pay.

September:

I am back again.

The QR Scan & Pay button is bigger.

That's it.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

April 11 - Digital Transactions Day

April 11 – UPI Beta Go Live Day

Everyday digital payments are often about very small moments.

Open.

Find.

Scan.

Pay.

When the action you need becomes a little easier to find, the journey becomes a little more natural.

Technology helps us stay connected.
Presence helps us stay close.

Disclaimer

This is a personal citizen observation based only on comparing the BHIM interface observed in July 2026 with the interface observed on 10 September 2026.

The observation is limited specifically to the increased prominence/size of the QR Scan & Pay button.

It is not a product review, feature comparison, endorsement, criticism, or claim about why the interface changed.

The only Joy is – The Joy of Digital Transactions.

Nothing More - Nothing Less

I Am Back, NPCI BHIM | Where My Next UPI Journey Begins

Sometimes the next journey begins with a fresh perspective.

Published 01 June 2026

On 1 June 2026, I am making a simple decision.

For my regular digital payments, I am returning to NPCI BHIM.

Not because other UPI apps are bad.

Not because I have a complaint.

Not because I am chasing cashback.

I am returning because I want to experience one of India's most important UPI platforms as an everyday user once again.

Today, after years of using multiple payment applications, I find myself drawn toward a platform that remains closely connected to the institution that built the UPI ecosystem itself.

Three words come to mind:

Simple. Secure. Trusted.

A Platform Worth Revisiting

India's digital payments journey has evolved dramatically over the last decade.

UPI has become part of everyday life.

From neighbourhood stores to large retailers, from utility bills to person-to-person transfers, digital payments are now woven into our daily routines.

The ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations such as:

  • Linked Bank Account UPI
  • UPI Lite
  • Credit Card on UPI
  • AutoPay
  • Merchant QR Payments
  • Delegated Payments

Behind this remarkable transformation stands NPCI, the institution that built and continues to strengthen the UPI infrastructure.

NPCI BHIM may not always dominate conversations, but it remains an important part of India's digital payments story.

My Plan

Over the coming months, I intend to use NPCI BHIM as my primary UPI application across three major payment modes.

Bank Account UPI

The traditional UPI experience.

Direct account-to-account payments through a linked bank account.

Simple and familiar.

UPI Lite

For everyday low-value transactions.

Tea.

Coffee.

Parking.

Small merchant payments.

The transactions that happen quickly and frequently throughout the day.

Credit Card on UPI

One of the most interesting additions to the UPI ecosystem.

The ability to use an eligible RuPay Credit Card through UPI combines the convenience of QR payments with the flexibility of credit.

What Caught My Attention

While exploring the latest NPCI BHIM experience, one feature stood out immediately.

The cashback section.

At first glance, it appears to be a small enhancement.

But I believe it reflects a thoughtful approach to user control.

The application now gives users a choice.

Cashback can either be withdrawn immediately or accumulated within the application and withdrawn later.

The message that caught my attention was simple:

"Keep your bank statements clean."

That sentence stayed with me.

Traditionally, cashback credits can appear as multiple entries in a bank statement.

Over time, they add clutter.

The new NPCI BHIM approach allows cashback to remain accumulated in one place until the user decides to withdraw it.

It is a small feature.

But it introduces flexibility.

And good digital products are often built around meaningful user choices.

Why This Matters

As someone who frequently writes about digital payments and advocates for Digital Transactions Day (April 11), I often think about what makes digital payments enjoyable.

The answer is surprisingly straightforward.

People enjoy digital payments when they feel:

  • Safe
  • Confident
  • In control

Whether it is UPI Lite, Credit Card on UPI, or the redesigned cashback experience, the common theme appears to be user control.

And user control builds trust.

A Personal Journey, Not A Review

This is not a review.

It is not a comparison.

And it is certainly not a farewell to other UPI applications.

India's UPI success story has been built through innovation from many participants across the ecosystem.

My return to NPCI BHIM should simply be viewed as a personal journey.

An opportunity to experience the platform regularly, observe its strengths, understand its evolution, and share those observations along the way.

Looking Ahead

Perhaps I will discover features that I appreciate.

Perhaps I will identify areas where further improvements are possible.

Either way, it promises to be an interesting experience.

For now, the objective is straightforward:

Use NPCI BHIM regularly.

Use UPI Lite.

Use Credit Card on UPI.

Use linked bank account payments.

And experience the platform with fresh eyes.

Closing Thoughts

Sometimes progress is about moving forward.

Sometimes progress is about taking a fresh look at something familiar.

For me, June 2026 begins with a return to one of India's most important digital payment platforms.

Not out of nostalgia.

Not out of criticism.

But out of curiosity, appreciation, and a desire to experience NPCI BHIM with fresh eyes.

I am back, NPCI BHIM.

And I look forward to where this next UPI journey leads.

Awesome – NPCI BHIM, UPI Notifications & Cashback Trends

 03 March 2026

At 6:52 PM and again at 8:33 PM on 03/03/2026, two notifications appeared.

No flashing banners.
No urgency countdown.
No gamified spin wheels.

Just structured information:

  • 4,36,285 users won cashback.
  • 7,85,829 users won cashback.
  • Defined transaction thresholds.
  • Defined reward caps.
  • Clear action prompts: Pay Now. Recharge Now.

From a neutral standpoint, this was not merely promotional messaging.

It was a live signal from a national retail payments grid.

The Institutional Layer Behind BHIM

At the center of this ecosystem sits the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella body operating India’s core retail payment systems.

BHIM — Bharat Interface for Money — is NPCI’s own UPI application. It is not a wallet riding on top of UPI. It is a direct public-facing interface into the UPI protocol.

Official references:

This institutional proximity matters. When BHIM sends a notification, it carries the credibility of the same entity that governs the payment rail itself.

Reading the Notification Structurally

The cashback amounts were modest:

  • Up to ₹50 for electricity or credit card bill payments above ₹500
  • Up to ₹25 for recharges above ₹199

In earlier digital payment phases, incentives were aggressive and acquisition-driven. Here, the economics appear calibrated.

What stands out is scale disclosure.

Lakhs of users.
Precise participation numbers.

This signals:

1.    Network density – High transaction concurrency without visible friction.

2.   Behaviour normalization – Bills and recharges are now routine digital flows.

3.   Marginal incentive reinforcement – Small nudges layered over stable usage.

The messaging does not attempt to create artificial urgency. It reflects ongoing participation.

Cashback as a Behavioural Regulator

From a payment-rail perspective, these notifications perform three quiet functions:

  • Participation broadcast – Showing others are already transacting.
  • Trust reinforcement – Associating activity with an institutional rail.
  • Soft behavioural regulation – Nudging structured transaction categories.

Defined thresholds reduce ambiguity. A bill above ₹500 qualifies. A recharge above ₹199 qualifies. The incentive cap is transparent.

There is no wallet float. No intermediary holding layer. Transactions remain direct bank-to-bank via UPI authentication and settlement.

That architectural consistency is significant.

The reward does not alter the transaction’s integrity. It merely overlays a minor incentive onto a system already designed for reliability.

Maturity Over Spectacle

The tone of the notifications reflects ecosystem evolution.

India’s UPI journey has moved from early-stage growth to embedded utility. Participation in lakhs for modest cashback values indicates normalization rather than experimentation.

No spectacle.
No excessive design theatrics.
No dependency on high-burn campaigns.

Just continuity.

The interface remains minimal — send, receive, scan, balance. The notification strategy mirrors that restraint.

A Quiet Indicator of Rail Stability

Viewed structurally, these alerts are less about ₹25 or ₹50.

They are density indicators.

The grid is active.
Transactions are flowing.
Participation is measurable at scale.

When a public payment interface communicates in this manner, it reflects confidence in infrastructure capacity — not excitement about novelty.

And that may be the most telling shift.

India’s digital payment ecosystem no longer needs to persuade aggressively. It simply signals activity.

Awesome — not because it demands attention.
Awesome — because the rail sustains momentum without noise.

In the long arc of payment evolution, that is what stability looks like.
