Citizen Observation 64 of 777 | Amazon Ad in Paytm App | Can User Attention Earn Cashback?

The Intro

I saw an Amazon advertisement appear when I opened my Paytm app, with a clear option to skip it.
It made me wonder: if my attention has value to an advertiser, could some of that value come back to me as cashback?

Could you also see the Advertisement?

The Trigger

The trigger for this observation was a full-screen Amazon Great Indian Festival advertisement appearing inside the Paytm app.

The user can either skip the advertisement or continue watching it.

That made me think about a different possibility.

What if Paytm offered an enhanced cashback reward to users who voluntarily watched the advertisement without skipping?

The idea is not simply to make users watch an advertisement.

It is to create a measurable value exchange:

Advertiser gets attention.
Paytm gets measurable engagement.
User gets cashback.

And behind the screen, the system could potentially generate useful MIS:

Ad shown → Skipped → Watched → Clicked → Converted

That could tell us something interesting—not only about advertising effectiveness, but also about whether rewarded attention can create better engagement.

The Prospective Audience

This observation could speak to a surprisingly wide audience.

The Paytm user — who may ask, “If I give my attention, can I earn something for it?”

The regular Paytm user — who may already be seeing such advertisements as part of the app experience.

The user who has not opened Paytm for some time — who may be encouraged to return if the word spreads that watching selected advertisements can earn enhanced cashback.

The wider digital audience — who may begin to see attention itself as something that can have measurable value.

And then there are two important professional audiences:

Advertising agencies — who could get a new model for measuring genuine attention rather than merely measuring an impression.

Brands — who could potentially pay for verified attention and engagement, while giving a part of that value back to the customer.

Perhaps the more interesting question is not:

“Can an advertisement earn Paytm money?”

but:

“Can an advertisement also earn something for the person who chooses to watch it?”

That, I think, is where CO64 begins.

Absolutely. We have the title, Intro, Trigger and Prospective Audience locked. Now let us build the remaining CO64 in the same established storytelling rhythm, while keeping the Paytm screenshot as the visual trigger and making the cashback proposition the central thought.

Act I — When My Attention Becomes the Product

I opened the Paytm app and encountered an Amazon advertisement occupying the screen.

There was a simple choice:

Watch or Skip.

That small choice made me think about something larger.

In digital advertising, an impression has value.
A completed view can have value.
A click can have value.
And a completed purchase can have even greater value.

But where does the value of the user's attention sit in this chain?

Today, the user generally receives the advertisement.

What if the user could also receive something in return for voluntarily giving the advertisement their attention?

Perhaps that is where cashback for verified attention could begin.

Act II — What If Attention Became a Measurable Reward?

Imagine a simple Paytm proposition.

The advertisement appears.

The user sees a clear choice:

SKIP
or
WATCH & EARN

If the user voluntarily watches the advertisement without skipping, an enhanced cashback could be credited—subject to clearly stated terms.

The interesting part is that this need not remain an unmeasurable promise.

The system could potentially record the journey:

Advertisement served
→ Skipped
→ Watched completely
→ Clicked
→ Converted

That creates a different kind of advertising measurement.

Not just:

How many people saw my advertisement?

But:

How many people willingly gave me their attention?

And perhaps an even more interesting question for the advertiser:

Did rewarded attention lead to better engagement?

The cashback would then not simply be a promotional expense.

It could become part of an attention-value exchange.

Act III — Can Three Participants Win?

This is where my observation becomes interesting.

Imagine three participants in the same digital ecosystem.

The Brand

Gets an opportunity to reach an already engaged audience and measure what happens after the advertisement is shown.

Paytm

Gets advertising revenue and a richer MIS on user engagement—skip rates, completion rates, clicks and potentially conversions.

The User

Gets something tangible in return:

Cashback for voluntarily giving attention.

Could this create a better equation?

Brand gets attention.
Platform gets measurable engagement.
User gets value.

And perhaps the real innovation would be giving the user a choice.

No forced viewing.

No hidden condition.

Simply:

If you choose to give your attention, should your attention have a value?

That is the question I would like to explore.

Closing Thought

A digital advertisement usually asks for one thing:

our attention.

Perhaps the next generation of digital advertising could ask a little differently:

“Would you like to watch—and earn?”

The interesting part would not be the cashback alone.

It would be whether a simple reward can transform an advertisement from an interruption into a voluntary value exchange.

Maybe attention deserves a seat at the value table too.

April 11 — Proposed Digital Transactions Day

Digital transactions keep evolving beyond simply moving money.

Here, the interesting transaction is different:

Attention → Engagement → Value

Perhaps April 11 can also be a moment to reflect on how digital experiences create value for the people participating in them.

The larger Digital Transactions Day advocacy continues separately at Move the Barrier.

April 11, 2016 is the UPI Beta Launch Day.

Disclaimer: This Citizen Observation is an independent personal observation based on the advertisement encountered in the Paytm app and the accompanying screenshot. The proposed cashback model is a citizen suggestion, not a claim that Paytm, Amazon or any advertiser currently offers or intends to offer such a mechanism. Any implementation would depend on the platform, advertiser, applicable terms, privacy considerations and relevant regulations. The measurement journey described above is a proposed conceptual model, not a statement about Paytm's current internal MIS or advertising systems.

I Am Back, NPCI BHIM | Where My Next UPI Journey Begins

Sometimes the next journey begins with a fresh perspective.

Advocating Digital Transactions Day (April 11)

On 1 June 2026, I am making a simple decision.

For my regular digital payments, I am returning to NPCI BHIM.

Not because other UPI apps are bad.

Not because I have a complaint.

Not because I am chasing cashback.

I am returning because I want to experience one of India's most important UPI platforms as an everyday user once again.

Today, after years of using multiple payment applications, I find myself drawn toward a platform that remains closely connected to the institution that built the UPI ecosystem itself.

Three words come to mind:

Simple. Secure. Trusted.

A Platform Worth Revisiting

India's digital payments journey has evolved dramatically over the last decade.

UPI has become part of everyday life.

From neighbourhood stores to large retailers, from utility bills to person-to-person transfers, digital payments are now woven into our daily routines.

The ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations such as:

  • Linked Bank Account UPI
  • UPI Lite
  • Credit Card on UPI
  • AutoPay
  • Merchant QR Payments
  • Delegated Payments

Behind this remarkable transformation stands NPCI, the institution that built and continues to strengthen the UPI infrastructure.

NPCI BHIM may not always dominate conversations, but it remains an important part of India's digital payments story.

My Plan

Over the coming months, I intend to use NPCI BHIM as my primary UPI application across three major payment modes.

Bank Account UPI

The traditional UPI experience.

Direct account-to-account payments through a linked bank account.

Simple and familiar.

UPI Lite

For everyday low-value transactions.

Tea.

Coffee.

Parking.

Small merchant payments.

The transactions that happen quickly and frequently throughout the day.

Credit Card on UPI

One of the most interesting additions to the UPI ecosystem.

The ability to use an eligible RuPay Credit Card through UPI combines the convenience of QR payments with the flexibility of credit.

What Caught My Attention

While exploring the latest NPCI BHIM experience, one feature stood out immediately.

The cashback section.

At first glance, it appears to be a small enhancement.

But I believe it reflects a thoughtful approach to user control.

The application now gives users a choice.

Cashback can either be withdrawn immediately or accumulated within the application and withdrawn later.

The message that caught my attention was simple:

"Keep your bank statements clean."

That sentence stayed with me.

Traditionally, cashback credits can appear as multiple entries in a bank statement.

Over time, they add clutter.

The new NPCI BHIM approach allows cashback to remain accumulated in one place until the user decides to withdraw it.

It is a small feature.

But it introduces flexibility.

And good digital products are often built around meaningful user choices.

Why This Matters

As someone who frequently writes about digital payments and advocates for Digital Transactions Day (April 11), I often think about what makes digital payments enjoyable.

The answer is surprisingly straightforward.

People enjoy digital payments when they feel:

  • Safe
  • Confident
  • In control

Whether it is UPI Lite, Credit Card on UPI, or the redesigned cashback experience, the common theme appears to be user control.

And user control builds trust.

A Personal Journey, Not A Review

This is not a review.

It is not a comparison.

And it is certainly not a farewell to other UPI applications.

India's UPI success story has been built through innovation from many participants across the ecosystem.

My return to NPCI BHIM should simply be viewed as a personal journey.

An opportunity to experience the platform regularly, observe its strengths, understand its evolution, and share those observations along the way.

Looking Ahead

Perhaps I will discover features that I appreciate.

Perhaps I will identify areas where further improvements are possible.

Either way, it promises to be an interesting experience.

For now, the objective is straightforward:

Use NPCI BHIM regularly.

Use UPI Lite.

Use Credit Card on UPI.

Use linked bank account payments.

And experience the platform with fresh eyes.

Closing Thoughts

Sometimes progress is about moving forward.

Sometimes progress is about taking a fresh look at something familiar.

For me, June 2026 begins with a return to one of India's most important digital payment platforms.

Not out of nostalgia.

Not out of criticism.

But out of curiosity, appreciation, and a desire to experience NPCI BHIM with fresh eyes.

I am back, NPCI BHIM.

And I look forward to where this next UPI journey leads.

super.money Kudos to the Real Time Monitoring Team.

No, this is not a complaint, just an appeal to streamline the cashback experience.

I am just waiting for a better Cashback experience.

super.money team would have noticed the success of the super.money  beta version and also associated feedback on social media.

The initial attraction of super.money app is the up to 5% cash back for merchant transactions.

I was also attracted to the offer and downloaded the super.money App. It looks like I am one of the many folks who attracted by the upto 5% cashback downloaded the super.money App.

So, in the coming days hope for a more better cashback experience. May be the super.money Team is overwhelmed by the response to the super.money App

Did a transaction on Big Basket today and was a bit surprised to see up a message that Cashback is valid only for Merchant Transactions.

So not sure as to where the issue is, issue at Big Basket end or super.money end.

As one of my favourite shopping apps is Big Basket, hopefully for the future transactions I will get the cashback due to me.

The only drawback as of now is the UPI Lite Wallet is yet to be activated.

To me the super.money App UI is smooth and very user friendly.

Any feedback on super.money cashback?

World Safe ePay Day: Conceptual Stage

Looking forward to the potential establishment of World Safe ePay Day, this proposed observance would focus on the significance of secure electronic payments in today's digital economy.

As financial transactions increasingly shift from physical to digital platforms, the importance of robust cybersecurity measures becomes paramount.

World Safe ePay Day aims to highlight best practices in digital security, promote consumer confidence, and foster global collaboration to safeguard electronic payment systems.

Disclaimer: These are my thoughts only. The beauty of UPI is that  a single bank account can be linked to multiple UPI Apps. Hence, the only happiness is spreading the Joy of Safe ePayments. World Safe ePay Day is one such opportunity.
